They emerged in a landscape where animal-like machines are in the process of rebuilding the world. Unfortunately, that plan didn’t work as intended and humanity was released early, with people forming primitive tribes without knowledge of the past.
After the machines stopped working after devouring the world, an AI construct called Gaia would terraform the barren rock and re-create life including humans. Humanity has perished but humans left a kernel for their resurrection in the Zero Dawn program. Taking place in the year 3040, it reveals a world where rogue robots have consumed all organic life on Earth. The sequel expands on the world building and gameplay of the fantastic original, which features a brilliant take on the post-apocalyptic world. Several projects fall into this trap, but once in a while, a release comes along that shows how side quests can be done right. At worst they feel like busy work or wells of frustration, becoming distractions that hamper the narrative. They’re often redundant or poorly designed. The issues stem from the quality of these activities. What was once a fun diversion that added depth and extra storytelling moments has turned projects into bloated and overwhelming messes. The side quest has become a problem in open-world games.
